Energy fact
While utilizing conventional energy methods, the reuse of an existing building is in
itself one of the most environmental forms of construction and also the most sustainable.
Sustainability fact
By reusing materials that were already part of the Banqueting Hall remains, less energy is
spent on sourcing materials from elsewhere.
Materials fact
A new glass and timber curtain wall was installed to the south of the building and completes
a once-damaged section. York stone, oak floors were inspired by the original building, with
glass panels finishing that area off. Exacting details include furniture specifically designed
by the architects Stanton Williams.
Design fact
Rather than creating a visitor centre from scratch, this building was created within the
Banqueting House, a former dwelling of Lord Cholmley (built 1669-72). The building comprises
two floors connected by both staircases and lifts.
Function fact
There are many things for the visitor to do inside. Information about the abbey and surrounding
area is given through museum objects, panels, videos and touch screens. A ticket/ information desk
and shop are also situated inside. Accessibility has been considered by the locating of a
glass-sided steel bridge that joins a first-floor doorway to the Abbey landscape.
Location fact
Original windows have been unblocked to give historically important views over the Abbey
and Whitby itself.
